Im Gegenteil: Es ist dringend notwendig, dass der Verbrauch von Öl und Gas schnell und stark gesenkt wird. In Deutschland hat das Verfassungsgericht die Politik dazu verpflichtet. Das ist der bessere Weg. Wenn statt der Abgeordneten die Richter die Klimapolitik betreiben, dann ist das gefährlich. Der Klimaschutz wird Härten und Opfer mit sich bringen. Die Kosten werden riesig sein. Es wird Gewinner und Verlierer geben. Gerade deshalb ist die demokratische Legitimierung der Maßnahmen so wichtig.

Das gilt keineswegs nur für die Amtsinhaberin, die es in dieser Disziplin zu einer gewissen Meisterschaft gebracht hat.

Last week I wrote about cryptocurrency, which is sort of becoming the monetary equivalent of the old joke about Brazil: “It’s the country of the future, and always will be.” The article drew a predictable wave of outrage from crypto fanatics — and there are no fanatics like crypto fanatics. What probably offended them most was my observation that this “revolutionary” technology is actually getting kind of old — Bitcoin was invented in 2009 — and has yet to find significant legitimate uses.

This context may explain why many British policy experts do not seem to feel an urgent need to figure out the future EU-UK relationship on defence. When the European Council on Foreign Relations polled these experts earlier this year, defence was not high on their list of priorities for close cooperation with the EU. In the list of 20 policy areas in which the UK government is likely to believe that “it will be of highest priority to cooperate closely with the EU27”, defence ranked in 11th place. However, when asked about working with EU countries on defence more broadly (outside EU structures), most respondents stated that the UK government had an interest in doing so.

Nehmen wir die Verbindung Köln-Berlin. Die reine Reisezeit ist mit knapp einer Stunde im Flieger natürlich kürzer als auf der Schiene, aber mit An- und Abreise zu den Flughäfen, Check-in und Wartezeiten summiert es sich auf mindestens dreieinhalb, wenn nicht vier Stunden und länger. Mit dem ICE sind Reisende zwar knapp viereinhalb Stunden unterwegs, dafür liegen die Bahnhöfe in den Innenstädten. In der Gesamtbilanz von Tür zu Tür läuft es ungefähr aufs Gleiche hinaus. Wozu also noch fliegen?
