That includes provisions that most consumers wouldn’t knowingly agree to: an inability to delete one’s own account, granting companies the right to claim credit for or alter their creative work, letting companies retain content even after a user deletes it, letting them gain access to a user’s full browsing history and giving them blanket indemnity. More often than not, there is a clause (including for The New York Times’s website) that the terms can be updated at any time without prior notice.

And it may make strategic and financial sense for the UK military to play a part in the development of at least some big-ticket military items (for instance, it is conceivable that the Future Combat Air System, a Franco-German-Spanish fighter jet project, could combine with the British-Italian Tempest). It seems likely that the UK would want to ensure that it had some power to shape these projects. Hence, the UK needs EU member states either to make the argument that it should be included, or to speak for it and articulate British views (much in the same way as some member states used to have the UK speak for them in the past). Who could these partners be?

24-01-2021Als Brückenbauer konnte Deutschland zwar kaum fungieren, zumal das Verhältnis zu China und Russland zunehmend konfrontativ war. Offen kritische Worte, auch in Richtung der USA, waren letztlich nur konsequent. Eine stärkere Zusammenarbeit unter den europäischen Mitgliedern kam dagegen durchaus zustande. Deutschland hat auch immer wieder die gewählten Mitglieder mobilisiert. Darauf lässt sich aufbauen, auch in anderen Gremien und Foren. Der Sicherheitsrat mag bei der Wahrung des Weltfriedens im Jahr des 75-jährigen Bestehens der UN ein teilweise desaströses Bild abgegeben haben. Die deutsche UN-Politik aber wurde durch die Mitgliedschaft durchaus gestärkt.

Vergessen wird dabei, dass es in der Politik immer zwei Mitten geben muss, damit sie nicht in die Irre geht: Einmal die Mitte zwischen den gesellschaftlichen Polen, das ist die Mitte dessen, was die Menschen so wollen und dem, was die Öffentlichkeit so redet. Entscheidend ist aber eine zweite Mitte, eine die, wenn es gut läuft, nur selten in Erscheinung tritt, nämlich die Mitte zwischen dem, was die Gesellschaft so will und redet und den realen, den materialen Wirklichkeiten.

The US government should throw its muscle behind ramping up a mammoth, rapid rollout of all forms of renewable energy.

There’s important work that I need Trump to perform in his post-presidency, and I need him to have proper megaphones to do it. It’s to blow apart this Republican Party.
